It's the fifth race of the 2021 Formula 1 season, with Lewis Hamilton currently leading the standings. There has already been some drama as was set to start on pole position on Sunday after recording the fastest lap in qualifying, but his crash on Saturday affected the gearbox and now he is unable to start at the front of the grid. As such, Max Verstappen and Valtteri Bottas will be at the front, with Hamilton in sixth. In this live blog, we'll have all the updates from the Circuit de Monaco. Max Verstappen secured his first win at the Monaco Grand Prix on Sunday, yet it easily could have been different.
The Monaco-born Charles Leclerc was set to begin the race on pole position but a gearbox problem led to him having to retire before the Monaco Grand Prix got underway. That allowed Verstappen to take an early lead, an advantage he never relinquished, despite some pressure from Carlos Sainz. Lando Norris managed to hold off Sergio Perez to secure a podium finish, too. It was an afternoon to forget for Mercedes, who had Lewis Hamilton finish in seventh while a mistake in the pits led to Valterri Bottas having to retire. Verstappen now has a four-point lead over Hamilton in the drivers' championship standings. The Ferrari's performed well in each practice session which surprisingly carried over to qualifying.

Ferrari inspected Charles Leclerc's car overnight after his crash in qualifying. The primary concern was Leclerc's gearbox, but it was cleared, and it was expected that Leclerc would start on pole. On race day, Leclerc brought the car out from the pits on the reconnaissance lap out to the grid, and a failure in the left driveshaft was detected.
There was not enough time to repair the problem before the race, and thus Leclerc did not start in the race. Ferrari later discovered the issue was caused by a cracked left-rear driveshaft hub. Lando Norris had his best qualifying result of the season and qualified fifth.
Championship leader Lewis Hamilton had his worst qualifying since the 2018 German Grand Prix, and qualified outside the top two for the first time in 2021, qualifying seventh. At the start of the race Valtteri Bottas got away slightly better than Verstappen, but the latter was able to cover off the former to take the lead into the first corner. Bottas later retired at his scheduled pitstop on lap 30, when his team was unable to remove his right front wheel due to a stripped wheel nut, promoting Carlos Sainz to second place and Lando Norris to third. Organized by the Automobile Club de Monaco since 1929 and part of the Formula One World Championship since 1950, great drivers have made history at the Monaco Grand Prix. These include Louis Chiron, the 1931 Grand Prix winner, who was the first and, so far, the only driver from Monaco to win the race. He was also one of the supporters of the creation of the Monaco Grand Prix alongside Anthony Noghès, who still lends his name to one of the circuit's corners. Over the years, prestigious champions have triumphed here. In the 1960s, British F1 racing driver Graham Hill took five victories in the Principality.
He held the record for many years, until Ayrton Senna won six times between 1987 and 1993, driving for Lotus and McLaren. The Brazilian's spirit lives on at the Monaco Grand Prix. The golden age of the Monaco race was when Senna and Frenchman Alain Prost, his great rival and four-time winner between 1984 and 1988, hotly contested the podium. Another noteworthy figure, Michael Schumacher, won five times between 1994 and 2001, driving race cars for Benetton then Ferrari. More recently, Nico Rosberg, followed by Lewis Hamilton , have won three times apiece, with Rosberg winning in 2013, 2014 and 2015 and Hamilton in 2008, 2016 and 2019.
Sebastian Vettel isn't far behind, having won twice for Red Bull and Ferrari in 2011 and 2017. Three former Monaco Grand Prix winners, Kimi Räikkönen, Daniel Ricciardo, and Fernando Alonso, all finished one lap down on race winner Verstappen and out of the points in 11th, 12th and 13th places respectively. This was the first time since the 2018 British Grand Prix that Mercedes had not led either championship. It was also the first time Verstappen was the points leader in his Formula One career. It occurs in front of the Monte Carlo Casino and a beautiful port. With numerous tight corners and elevation changes as well as a tunnel, it's one of the highly demanding tracks in F1. Despite the relatively average speeds, it's a dangerous place for motor races, and in most cases, it involves the intervention of safety cars. This could be a pit-lane start at the absolute best...

On race day during the warm up lap, Leclerc discovered a drive shaft issue which effectively prevented him from participating in the race. Ferrari checked the car over night to make sure everything was fixed after his crash in qualifying, but it wasn't enough. This meant Sainz was Ferrari's only ray of hope in Monaco. Sainz did everything the team could have asked for and earned himself a magnificent second place.
With retirements from Leclerc and Bottas, Sainz secured his first podium for Ferrari. The season is early, but the tide has finally shifted in favor of Red Bull Racing. At a time when Red Bull desperately needed a good results to stay within fighting range of Mercedes, well they did just that. All eyes were on the top two teams going into the weekend, but it was the red team who caught everyone by surprise. Free practice session results are typically not looked into that deeply, but considering a Ferrari was in the top 3 of every practice session meant that there was definitely pace that had not been seen in the last couple of seasons. The teams have started launching their cars already, and there will be a closed shakedown in Barcelona between February 23 and 25.
It won't be covered like a full test, but we will find out what the best lap time are at the end of every day. Despite setting a fastest first sector on his final lap before the red flag, Max Verstappen had to settle for second place for Red Bull, but took comfort from seeing F1 world title rival Lewis Hamilton struggle down in seventh place. There is not long to wait until the latest indication of whether that will change, however, as drivers will be practising on Thursday, instead of Friday, for Sunday's grand prix. Qualifying, as well as the third practice session, will still take place as usual on the Saturday. In a sign Formula One may have gotten it right with its regulation changes to improve racing, drivers gave mostly positive reviews of the series' new generation of cars after the first few days of preseason testing. Mick Schumacher did not take part in qualifying due to an accident that occurred during the third practice session.
He was permitted to race at the stewards' discretion. He also received a five-place grid penalty for an unscheduled gearbox change. The penalty was nullified as he would start from last place regardless. As a result, the Grand Prix de Monaco is the only motor race that doesn't adhere to the mandated 190-mile or 305-kilometre minimum race distance. The Monaco Grand Prix event was part of the historic pre-Second World War European Championship. And it was also part of the First World Championship competition of drivers in the year 1950.
Between 1955 and 1963, the Monaco Grand Prix was designated as the European Grand Prix two times. During this period, the title was an honorary designation given out yearly to one of the Grand Prix races in Europe. Popularly known as Mr. Monaco, Graham Hill was one of the most celebrated Monaco Grand Prix winners in the 1960s. He was the winner of five Monaco Grand Prix titles during the 1960s, but he cannot match Ayrton Senna from Brazil, who won the Monaco Grand Prix title six times. Ayrton won five consecutive races between 1989 and 1993.
Verstappen has been in front since the start of the race - recording the quickest lap too - and if he holds on, he will go top of the championship standings for the first time in his career, 124 races in. O yes, it was a fairly good session with lots of tension but right at the moment of climax, well, it turned into an anti-climax, unfortunately. Still, a Ferrari on pole was unexpected heading into this weekend and indeed the season.
There was some doubt over whether his crash would have necessitated a gearbox change and thus a grid penalty but Ferrari have said this morning that they will not be changing it. The redesigned circuit next to the beach outside Amsterdam promises a lively trackside atmosphere, exciting racing and close proximity to one of Europe's most popular cities.
Spectator interest in the Dutch Grand Prix has been huge, but F1 Experiences still has availability on selected packages for this highly anticipated race, including all-inclusive hospitality in the Champions Club. Motorsport in Monaco also means the Grand Prix Historique. Organized since 1997 by the Automobile Club de Monaco, it is held every other year a few days before the prestigious F1 World Championship race. It takes place on the same circuit as the Monaco GP, through the heart of the city. The single-seaters are collector's items dating from the pre-war period to the 1970s, so the race is much slower. Split into eight series by category, it harks back to the days of great winners like Juan-Manuel Fangio, Graham Hill and Jackie Stewart.
It is an unmissable event for classic car fanatics and lovers of the golden age of motorsports. The race itself was very rudimentary with Hamilton pitting earlier than the rest around him. It was a strange move as the over-cut is the better strategy around Monaco. On lap 31, Bottas pit and yet again, tragedy struck him. His right front wheel nut was stripped which resulted in the wheel becoming unremovable and ending his race.
Perez showed great race pace as he performed the over-cut strategy and his strong effort earned him a fourth place finish. Verstappen, with pressure surrounding him and his team to perform well, cruised to a race win. In the end Verstappen and Red Bull can take a deep breath as they walk away from Monaco with leads in both the driver and constructor championships.
